This textbook is kept in the FNS Resources Bin # 6, located in the RSS Library textbook room.In Ancient Pathways, Ancestral Knowledge, Nancy Turner integrates over forty years of research into a two-volume ethnobotanical tour-de-force.Drawing on information shared by Indigenous botanical experts and collaborators, the ethnographic and historical record, and from linguistics, paleobotany, archaeology, phytogeography, and other fields, Turner weaves together a complex understanding of the traditions of use and management of plant resources in this vast region. She follows Indigenous inhabitants over time and through space, showing how they actively participate in their environments, managed and cultivated valued plant resources, and maintained key habitants that supported their dynamic cultures for thousands of years, as well as how knowledge was passed on from generation to generation and from one community to another.Volume I presents a historical overview of ethnobotanical knowledge in the region before and after European contact and examines the ways in which Indigenous peoples used and interacted with plants--for nutrition, This textbook is kept in the FNS Resources Bin # 5, located in the RSS Library textbook room., and medicine.

Eighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. She dreams of a fresh start at college, but when family tragedy strikes, Daunis puts her future on hold to look after her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie, the charming new recruit on her brother Levi's hockey team. Yet even as Daunis falls for Jamie, she senses the dashing hockey star is hiding something. Everything comes to light when Daunis witnesses a shocking murder, thrusting her into an FBI investigation of a lethal new drug. Reluctantly, Daunis agrees to go undercover, drawing on her knowledge of chemistry and Ojibwe traditional medicine to track down the source. But the search for truth is more complicated than Daunis imagined, exposing secrets and old scars. At the same time, she grows concerned with an investigation that seems more focused on punishing the offenders than protecting the victims. Now, as the deceptions--and deaths--keep growing, Daunis must learn what it means to be a strong Anishinaabe kwe (Ojibwe woman) and how far she'll go for her community, even if it tears apart the only world she's ever known.

Hundreds of houses are being destroyed, entire neighborhoods reduced to ashes. By order of Emperor Napoleon III, Baron Haussmann has begun a series of large-scale renovations that will permanently alter the face of old Paris, molding it into a "modern city". The reforms will erase generations of history, but in the midst of the tumult, one woman will take a stand.Rose Bazelet is determined to fight against the destruction of her family home until the very end, even while others flee to new houses on bigger streets. She stakes her claim in the basement of the old house on rue Childebert, ignoring the sounds of change that march closer and closer each day. And as she waits, she escapes into the past, writing letters to her beloved late husband, Armand.
HBJ Shakespeare was developed in response to a growing need for an integrated language arts and student-centred approach to the study of Shakespeare. By providing a wide range of writing, speaking/listening, viewing, and independent project activities that allow for personal and creative response, this series assists students to recognize both the accessibility of Shakespeare's plays and the relevancy of the plays to their own experience, and gives them the opportunity to further explore Shakespeare in ways meaningful to them. Students are encouraged to become familiar with and involved in the plays from the beginning of their reading by using these features common to all HBJ Shakespeare Ediitions. .

Over more than 100 years, the Canadian Government took 150,000 First Nations, Metis and Inuit children from their families and placed them in residential schools. In these schools, young people were assigned a number, forced to wear European-style clothes, forbidden to speak their native language, required to work, and often subjected to physical and psychological abuse. If they tried to leave the schools to return to their families, they were captured by the RCMP and forced back. Run by churches, the schools were paid for by the federal government. The last residential school closed in 1996.It took decades for people to speak out in public about the devastating impact of residential schools.
Theodore Fontaine lost his family and freedom at the age of seven, when his parents were forced to leave him at an Indian residential school. His life was not his own for the next 12 years. The after-effects of those years have lasted much longer. In this powerful memoir, Theodore shares his experiences and the insights that have evolved on his healing journey. Broken Circle resonates with his resolve to help himself and others, and with his enduring belief that one can pick up the shattered pieces and use them for good.Theodore Fontaine has written a testimony that should be mandatory reading for everyone out there who has ever wondered, "Why can't Aboriginal people just get over Residential Schools?".

A Mission to Mars.A Freak Accident. One Man's Struggle to Survive.Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate the planet while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded on Mars' surface, completely alone, with no way to signal Earth that he's alive. And even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone years before a rescue could arrive.Chances are, though, Mark won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark's not ready to quit. Armed with nothing but his ingenuity and his engineering skills--and a gallows sense of humour that proves to be his greatest source of strength--he embarks on a dogged quest to stay alive, using his botany expertise to grow food and even hatching a mad plan to contact NASA back on Earth. As he overcomes one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next, Mark begins to let himself believe he might make it off the planet alive. But Mars has plenty of surprises in store for him yet. Grounded in real, present-day science from the first page to the last, yet propelled by a brilliantly ingenious plot that surprises the reader again and again, The Martian is a truly remarkable thriller: an impossible-to-put-down suspense novel that manages to read like a real-life survival tale.

William Shakespeare wrote or collaborated on thirty-eight plays during his lifetime, and among them were seventeen comedies. During the Elizabethan era when Shakespeare lived and wrote, the term "comedy" did not mean that a play was funny, but that is had a lighter tone and a happy ending, usually involving a marriage or two. But that does not mean Shakespeare's comedies are not funny! Shakespeare was a master of wit and wordplay, which is why his skill is still charming audiences to this day. While many of Shakespeare's tragedies explore dark themes like death, betrayal, murder, and revenge, his comedies focus on themes like courtship and marriage, using them to look closer at social pressures, relationships, and human behaviour of the time period. The lighter tone is deceptive, as Shakespeare did not hesitate to use his comedies to turn a critical eye (and pen) to the follies of the time.Contains A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Taming of the Shrew.

She follows Indigenous inhabitants over time and through space, showing how they actively participate in their environments, managed and cultivated valued plant resources, and maintained key habitants that supported their dynamic cultures for thousands of years, as well as how knowledge was passed on from generation to generation and from one community to another.Volume I presents a historical overview of ethnobotanical knowledge in the region before and after European contact and examines the ways in which Indigenous peoples used and interacted with plants--for nutrition, technologies, and medicine.
